Nestled alongside the James River just south of Richmond, historic Hopewell, Virginia is home to more than 23,000 residents. Despite its complex history, Hopewell has been nicknamed the “Wonder City” because of its resiliency and capacity to bounce back. The city is currently undergoing a revitalization, reinventing itself, and experiencing economic growth and prosperity.

The city’s renaissance relies heavily on the protection and peace of mind provided by the Hopewell Police Department.

In 2022, the city experienced an unprecedented 78% increase in violent crime. The Hopewell P.D. needed to implement a city-wide security system to act as a deterrent and assist in investigations, but inaccessible power and traditional infrastructure constraints were hindering their technology deployments. Their need for mobile Wi-Fi and high-quality security gear posed challenges in terms of power, connectivity, and video transmission/monitoring.

Hopewell’s Deputy Chief, Donald Reid, was searching for a reliable, flexible, all-in-one security solution to bolster the city’s efforts to reduce crime and shorten response times. Gridless delivered exactly what was needed: reliable power, seamless connectivity, and cutting-edge surveillance cameras. Twenty-three Gridless Sentry units are powering a portion of nearly one hundred cameras that monitor buildings, intersections, parks, and other areas, and providing connectivity needed for video transmission, as well as battery backup to guard against downtime.

Within a few months of implementing the Gridless system, the Hopewell P.D. solved three homicides, multiple hit and run investigations, a firebombing incident, and several missing persons cases.

“The instant eye on the crime in the area has been huge for us,” said Deputy Chief Reid. “It has definitely enhanced the quality of investigations that we do here in the city. It was an easy sell to our council and our community loves it.”
